The Love and Gelato Movie Review is based on Jenna Evans Welch’s first book in the Love & Gelato trilogy. When the book was first published in 2016, it swiftly rose to New York Times bestseller status. It was just a matter of time until Netflix or another studio acquired the film rights to this one, given the excitement it had received.
In 2021, Brandon Camp, who is also the film’s writer and director, began shooting in Florence, Italy. He is best known for directing the love story Benji and Love Happens, starring Jennifer Aniston and Aaron Eckhart.
It will be fascinating to see if Netflix has plans to adapt the remaining books in the series, Love & Luck and Love & Olives, into movies as well because this is only the first in the series.
Brandon Camp’s Love & Gelato Movie is just like the book – fun, sweet, and a feel-good kind of watch. The film has its own set of romantic tropes about self-discovery, hinting at why the book was a bestseller.
Rome is brilliantly shown in the movie, and spectators are made to feel as though they are there. The lovely frames facilitate a link to the city and its cuisine. Love & Gelato has seen it all, from St. Peter’s Square to the Colosseum.
The Storyline of Love and Gelato Movie
The lead, Lina Emerson, is your classic awkward, nerdy girl in a romantic comedy setting, who harbors a unique love for gelato.
Love & Gelato’s movie revolves around Lina’s solo trip to Rome. Even though such a trip poses significant challenges for her socially awkward self, she is determined to persevere, since it was her mother’s dying wish.
Her mother’s insistence on the trip stemmed from the fact that she too had taken that trip before college and wanted her daughter to have a similar experience.
Lina uses her journal as a map of the city while she is staying with her mother’s best friend in Rome. Her vacation, however, is very different from her mother’s for obvious reasons. She embarks on a journey of self-discovery as a result of her weird but lovely encounters, which encourage her to accept who she is and open up.
As Lina searches for her father and learns more about her mother’s past, she finds herself enchanted by the city. She is also juggling a complicated love triangle of her own. The movie effectively builds suspense around her own romantic interests so that spectators are left in the dark until the very end.
